Common layout forms of horizontal CNC boring and milling machine

Horizontal CNC boring and milling machines (horizontal machining centers) have many types of layouts. The main difference lies in the structure of the column and the movement of the X and Z coordinate axes (there is no difference in the movement of the Y axis). Commonly used columns have two forms: the single column and the double columns with a frame structure. The movement of Z coordinate axis has two types: table movable type and column movable type. Through different combinations of the aforementioned basic forms, many other variants can also be derived. For example, the X and Z axes could adopt a structure in which the column moves and the table is completely fixed, or the X axis with a movable column and the Z axis with a movable table instead.


The double columns with a frame structure adopts a symmetrical structure. The headstock moves up and down between the two columns. Compared with the traditional side-mounted headstock structure, the structural rigidity of the double columns is greatly improved. In addition, the spindle box is positioned from the inside of guide rails on both sides, and the displacement of the spindle axis caused by thermal deformation is limited to the vertical direction. Therefore, the Y axis can be compensated to reduce the impact of thermal deformation.
